President’s Message

Volunteers are special people.  We give our time, generosity, compassion, and care with integrity.  When I first started volunteering, a long-time volunteer advised me: “Volunteers must realize that it is a commitment; you are not just giving your time, but you are giving a part of yourself to help and care for others.”  That is what and who our volunteers are.

Volunteer Services (the Auxiliary) began in 1963 and this year we celebrate our 58th year.  With continued support from the community, we have been able to raise money for equipment, provide services to the hospital and give comfort to patients and their families.

Patient Care, the Courtesy Desk, the Coffee and Gift Shop, and the HELLP Desk are just some of the areas where volunteers provide support to the hospital. We also assist in Triage, Bone Densitometry, Mammography, and Same-Day Surgery. In addition, by way of our Hospitality Committee, we provide books and magazines to the patient rooms, and keep the waiting rooms supplied with reading materials, and colouring books and crayons.

Annually we hold a Valentine’s Tea, a spring yard sale, a Christmas Bazaar, and other timely events.  Behind the scenes, we are supported by many knitters, bakers, and those creative volunteers who make crafts.

We are very fortunate to have a strong support from the CEO, the Board of Directors, the Foundation and all the Staff at LACGH.

Although volunteers have not been in the hospital since March 2020 because of COVID-19 restrictions, we are told we are missed by patients and staff. During our absence, many volunteers continue to knit and create, and others ask what they can do to help remotely. We are all anxious to return to our volunteer posts.

Knowing this COVID situation will not last forever, we continue to recruit volunteers.  If you, or anyone you know, are interested in joining our volunteers you may contact Susan Jack susan.jack@lacgh.napanee.on.ca, who will be pleased to forward you an application form and advise you of the steps necessary to become a volunteer at LACGH.
