Bone Mineral Densitometry

 
The Diagnostic Imaging Department is thrilled to offer Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD) services to our clients close to home in a new state of the art, warm and welcoming environment. This program is located on the lower level of the hospital and can be accessed at the back parking lot entrance. Patients need to be referred by their physician and appointments are booked through the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

BMD is a low dose xray used to predict the risk of Osteoporosis.
 

How can I get one? 

A BMD must be ordered by your family Physician.
 

Facts about BMD?

According to the 2010 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Management of Osteoporosis in Canada please note the following:
  • 1 in 4 women over the age of 50 and 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 have osteoporosis in Canada.
  • A Bone Mineral Density test in addition to clinical risk factors assist Physicians in determining their patient’s risk of osteoporosis. From these results, the Physician is then able to create a treatment plan, incorporating regular weight—bearing exercise, calcium (diet and supplements) vitamin D and fall prevention strategies.
