About the LACGH Volunteer Services

Volunteer Services to L. & A. Hospital was established in 1963, some three years before the Hospital itself was opened. Its first task was to raise funds to help equip the new hospital. They succeeded brilliantly and ever since have continued to help raise funds for equipment.

Although raising funds for equipment purchase is perhaps the most well recognized function of Auxiliaries, each member has made a personal commitment to use their time and talent in every way possible in support of all hospital patients and services. The community participates in such annual fundraising opportunities as the St Patrick's Stew Lunch, the Fall Bazaar, and many other events.

While Hospital Staff provide the patients with the professional care they require, Volunteer Services members provide a wide range of services. Volunteers greet visitors at the entrance at the Courtesy desk to guide them to the various in-hospital services such as clinics, radiology, day surgery etc. They visit patients with gift and library carts, porter patients within the hospital, post letters and in countless ways make hospital stay a little brighter for the patient. Volunteers manage and staff a well-stocked Gift and Coffee Shop which provides relaxed refreshment and distraction for visitors.

All Hospital Auxiliaries (Volunteer Services) are members of a provincial body, the Hospital Auxiliary Association (HAAO). For organizational purposes the HAAO has divided the province into regions, each of which holds an annual Conference which is attended by representatives from each Hospital Auxiliary (Volunteer Service) in the region.
